Purpose of this Note
This Practice Note examines how Psychological Leadership may be exercised through operational supervision within policing environments. It introduces a practical leadership framework through which Sergeants, Senior Sergeants and frontline supervisors may maintain visibility of cumulative operational and organisational strain within teams.
Practice Insight
Psychological Leadership is exercised through operational supervision by maintaining visibility of cumulative operational and organisational strain within everyday policing environments. Within the Institute’s framework, this visibility is supported through six interconnected leadership functions: Observe, Interpret, Engage, Monitor, Report and Escalate. Together, these functions provide a practical framework through which Psychological Leadership may be exercised within operational environments.
